Clear the Shelters

August 17th is International Homeless Animals Day. This day is huge for us at One of A Kind. All of our pets are homeless, and all of us have dedicated our lives to finding their forever homes. The goal is to place every pet who enters our facility into loving, permanent care.

International Homeless Animals Day is recognized on the third Saturday of August each year. 2019 marks the 28th anniversary of this annual event.  So where did this day of recognition start and why?

The International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) created this day of recognition in 1992 because it was clear that pet overpopulation was a growing concern.  The animal control facilities began killing healthy pets for space, rather than humanely euthanizing the suffering animals. Space killing is done because our society has failed pets by not properly caring for them and/or having them spayed and neutered. In 2011, 2.6 million shelter pets were killed. The number has declined to 1.5 million per year, but this is still a staggering amount. That is 4,110 cats and dogs (collectively) killed every single day in the United States alone.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) piggy-backed this date with their Clear the Shelters event. This campaign began five years ago in an attempt to bring awareness to pet homelessness and encourage those considering adoption to take the leap. The day is recognized across the county by shelters and rescues with discounted and/or waived adoption fees. One of A Kind will be honoring this day with discounted adoption rates of our own. Adult cats will be adopted for $20. Kittens four months to one year will be adopted for $60 and kittens are BOGO from the same litter. Most adult dogs will be adopted for $50. Some medium-sized dogs will have 50% off their adoption fee. Please share this with friends and family who may be interested in adopting a pet and help us spread awareness of pet homelessness. Our vision is to achieve a no-kill community where all pets have loving homes.
