One of A Kind Education

Hair Comes Trouble — Why is grooming so important?

When companion animals arrive at One of A Kind, a grooming session is often the first step in their fresh start. Whether they’re coming from a high-intake shelter, a former puppy mill, or a hoarding situation, most pets need immediate care to feel comfortable and healthy. So what does that care include—and why does it matter?

Grooming is essential health care. Done well, it takes time and can vary in cost based on a pet’s size, coat type, and style needs. Because grooming works best on a regular schedule, planning for it helps keep pets comfortable and prevents larger issues down the road. While there are plenty of cosmetic add-ons out there, our focus is on the fundamentals that support hygiene and health.

Regular grooming:

  • Keeps skin and coat healthy by distributing natural oils, reducing shedding, and preventing matting.
  • Reveals hidden concerns early—like ear infections, skin irritation, parasites, or cysts—that can be missed under longer fur.
  • Prevents matting from progressing into painful skin problems and makes it harder for fleas and ticks to hide.
  • Protects mobility with routine nail trims (overgrown nails can curl into paw pads and strain joints).
  • Supports overall wellness with simple habits like cleaning your pet’s eyes and ears, which can help prevent infections and flag issues such as allergies.

Daily brushing strengthens your bond and helps pets feel their best. And even if your dog or cat doesn’t need regular haircuts, consistent bathing, nail trims, and eye/ear care are still important.

Most pets act like brand-new animals after a good groom—more relaxed, more confident, and more ready to meet their future families. Creating a calm, positive grooming experience is part of our promise at One of A Kind: to keep every pet healthy, clean, and protected as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
