Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week

September 16-22 is “Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week.” There are numerous factors that could cause a pet to be considered “less adoptable”. In simple terms, any pet who is having difficulty being adopted from a rescue or shelter for a specific reason is “less adoptable.” Some of these factors include, but are not limited to, advanced age, medical conditions/special needs, black coats and behavioral issues.

Recent surveys conducted by Petfinder.com revealed interesting statistics about the adoption rates of those animals considered “less adoptable.” A whopping 95% of rescues surveyed currently have pets they would define as “hard to adopt”, 33% of shelters say they’ve had pets posted on their sites for one to two years and 27% admit they’ve had pets waiting for more than two years for their forever family. The typical pet spends about 12 weeks up on a site before finding a new home, but the profiles of “less adoptable” pets spend nearly four times as long on pet adoption sites.

One of A Kind is not immune to these statistics. We currently have numerous pets in our care with special needs, who have been with us for quite some time:

  • Aging dogs: Jackie and Eliza
  • Bonded pairs: Annabelle and Pooh Bear
  • Black cats: Dulcie, Sweet Chili, Snuggly, McAllister, Cyprin and Blacky
  • Dogs with heart murmurs and seizure disorders: Teddy and Scruff
  • Cats with Feline Leukemia: Hugh Heffner, Simba, Jezebel, and Terrance
  • Smokey is our diabetic kitty, and Fonda is our sweet pooch with severe skin allergies

Regardless of their reason for being “less adoptable”, they are still deserving of a loving home. Please visit us next week and consider opening your hearts and homes to our One of A Kind pets.
