We canât think of a better way to celebrate an entire month! Contrary to what some may think, Pit Bull Terriers are a very loving, affectionate breed. Unfortunately, this breed (which is actually a general term) has been used and abused by humans to the point of receiving a negative reputation and being banned in several areas. Letâs dispel the misinformation and reveal how truly wonderful these fur babies really are.
The term âPit Bullâ is a general term that encompasses several actual breeds that have descended from Bulldogs and Terriers. The Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier, and the American Bulldog are just three of several breeds that may be categorized as a Pit Bull. Some refer to âBully Breeds,â which would then also encompass the English Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Boxer, Mastiff, Boston Terrier, and several others. Regardless of which category they fall into, or what others may call them, we love them all and pay no attention to what society has chosen to label them.
The term âPitâ derives from the fact that irresponsible humans discovered the strength and muscle mass of these dogs and chose to train them to pit fight. However, this is not the true nature of these breeds, and they must be specifically trained to do so. Just as my little Chiweenie canât sniff out drugs at the airport, Pit Bulls canât win dog fights without being formally trained. Irresponsible humans that allow Pit Bulls to hurt others and the gasoline of the media have together led to a society believing the dogs are all dangerous. This couldnât be further from the truth.
As with any dog, proper socialization is key. Without proper socialization early on, any dog of any breed will become reactive to anything unfamiliar. This includes, but is not limited to adults, children, dogs, cats, and wildlife. This is the first and essential step in training any dog to become aggressive. Isolation is just as harmful to dogs as it is to humans.
Over the past sixteen years, we have rescued several hundred, if not thousand, Pit Bull breeds. Truthfully, these dogs are just as friendly, sweet, cuddly, loving, joyful, and loyal as any other breed. They can be couch potatoes, best friends, cat-loving, service, and therapy dogs as well. We have several available at the rescue who would greatly appreciate (and deserve) a loyal, loving family. Please consider opening your home to these babies and help dispel the misinformation that has been spread about them.
