One of A Kind Education

A National Look at Pet Ownership

For those of us who have been working in the pet rescue and shelter industry for several years, we have witnessed a significant transformation. Leading into 2020, the country was making slow, steady progress towards a no-kill community. Shelters were still full but not overflowing, and rescues were able to pull from shelters to help alleviate the tension.

However, recent events have brought new challenges. The pandemic saw 23 million Americans acquire pets, creating a huge demand. Puppy mills and breeders stepped in to meet this challenge, leading to an increase in unaltered pets. Meanwhile, veterinary clinics closed temporarily, and many veterinarians retired or sold their practices, leading to increased veterinary costs. Additionally, the inflation economy has affected discretionary spending.

As Americans have returned to work and faced rising costs, pet returns to shelters and rescues have increased. Stricter pet ownership rules from landlords have also contributed to this. Shelters that were once able to end euthanasia for space are now struggling with these decisions again.

Despite these challenges, there is hope and a path forward. By making significant changes, we can improve the situation for companion animals. Everyone can play a part in creating change. Reach out to your legislators to end volume breeding in your area. Support House Bill 443. Learn about TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) to decrease the stray cat population. Encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to adopt rather than shop for pets. Spay and neuter your pets to prevent unwanted litters. Volunteer, foster, or donate to your local rescue to support their efforts.

If you would like to help make a positive impact, please reach out to Volunteer@Oneofakindpets.com and/or donate. Together, we can make a difference and create a better future for our beloved companion animals.
