One of A Kind Education

What Makes One of A Kind Different?

From the very beginning, One of A Kind was founded to represent the underdog. Pun intended. The companion animals who are weak, neglected, abused, sick, abandoned, injured, and homeless. Fortunately, there are several animal welfare organizations in our county, state, and country. Each with its own mission, vision, and philosophies. But what makes One of A Kind different from the others? Our mission and matching hearts.

While most other rescues pull the cats and dogs that they feel are most highly adoptable, we pull the black Pitbulls, the elderly, and the heartworm positive. So far this year, we have rescued dozens of adult dogs who are heartworm positive, at an average cost to the rescue of $1,100 each for treatment.

In the past eight weeks, we have rescued eleven puppies who tested positive for parvo. Most rescues run in the opposite direction of a positive parvo test, as it is highly contagious and often deadly. Others choose to euthanize immediately, as the cost is too high and the risk is too great. However, we step up for those suffering and act as quickly as possible to treat them. If a local hospital receives a stray puppy that has tested positive, the call is made to One of A Kind to claim the stray pup (and financial responsibility). Recently, a local veterinary practice reached out to our clinic to purchase our parvo virus treatment serum because they had not yet obtained it. We keep it in stock regularly, as we want to be prepared for those who may require this life-saving treatment. If the puppies need hospitalization, our staff acts quickly to rush them to the emergency hospital where they will receive IV fluids, antibiotics, antinausea, and supportive care. This isolation treatment is $1,200 per day in the emergency hospital. We step up for these lives because we know that nobody else will and they are worthy of a chance. More often than not, we are able to save them, and they go on to live a very happy, full quality of life.

The kitties are no different. When most animal control facilities euthanize for positive ringworm tests, we rescue them and house an isolation room committed to treating this skin condition. It is contagious, but it is very curable and (in our opinion) not a reason to euthanize. Dozens of kitties each year pass through our ringworm isolation room and our staff wears full personal protective equipment to care for them each and every day. Eye enucleations, amputations, and various health conditions are commonly treated at One of A Kind Pet Rescue. Dentals? No problem. Our clinic performs several dentals each week for both feline and canine rescues in need of dental attention. A dental cleaning and exam at a private practice is $600-$1,800 yet we do them every week at our clinic for homeless pets.

One of A Kind Pet Rescue and Spay Neuter Clinic is different because WE are different. Our staff follows a mission, vision, and philosophy that every life matters and every life is One of A Kind. Every life is deserving of love. If you would like to help us care for those most in need of our help, please donate to our medical fund.
