Is Obedience Training Necessary?
Each week One of A Kind Pet Rescue finds loving homes for several puppies. In most cases, we’ve watched them grow from birth. It’s easy to love a sweet, cuddly puppy, but it’s not always easy to be a responsible dog owner. Providing a loving, comfortable home for your new puppy is important, but it’s just as important to provide rules and structure.
For their own safety, puppies require constant supervision during playtime. Why not use this time constructively? Spend a few minutes each day teaching the basics, such as “sit” and “stay.” Puppies have a limited attention span at eight weeks of age but can quickly catch on to simple commands if practiced consistently. Positive reinforcement in the form of small, healthy treats can be very effective as well. If the task of training is unfamiliar to you, obedience classes and trainers are available to assist with the process. Research those of interest and choose one that best suits your dog, family and schedule.
We often see dogs approaching their first birthday who’ve never had any obedience training. This can create a chaotic environment. Routine vet services, grooming and handling can be taxing for both the individuals involved and the dog. A well-trained dog equates to a well-mannered dog; thus time spent together is enjoyable and not stressful –increasing the bond. Additionally, a well-mannered dog won’t need to be confined when company is present and will receive more affection/attention as a result. You will never have to worry about a well-trained dog jumping on Grandma or Grandpa and causing serious injury. Some simple things that dogs should learn and know:
- Sit
- Leave it
- Stay
- Come or Heal
- Down
