Making Strides Towards a No-Kill Vision
From the beginning, the vision of One of A Kind Pet Rescue has been to create a no-kill society where every cat and dog has a loving home. To achieve this, it is important to understand what is meant by the terms no-kill and euthanasia.
Killing refers to the act of putting an animal to death when it could otherwise have a lasting quality of life. This unfortunate act often occurs in animal control facilities due to the limitation of space. When unwanted cats and dogs are taken to the local animal control facility, space fills up. That is when killing for space occurs, as the county animal control facilities are government organizations that must control the unwanted pet population. Pets can be, and are adopted from these facilities, but sadly, the intake numbers far outweigh the adoptions. Since the inception of One of A Kind Pet Rescue in 2005, our mission and vision are aimed at ending this senseless killing.
Killing also occurs when owners take their pets to the vet to be “euthanized” due to treatable conditions or undesirable behaviors. Euthanization occurs when a pet is at the end of life and is suffering. The humane treatment for that pet is to end the suffering through euthanizing. Then, and only then, is it acceptable. One of A Kind Pet Rescue eagerly partners with animal control facilities to end this senseless killing across our country. We have made great strides in Summit County, Ohio and are now reaching beyond our back yard to help those areas that have not had the resources to deal with pet overpopulation.
Our recent collaboration with Marked Tree Animal Rescue in Arkansas is a direct effort to save the homeless pets in that area and improve their kill rate. Mission PAWSible is the name given to that rescue mission that has now taken place on three separate occasions. Not only are we saving the pets in that area, but we are bringing hope to an area that has none. The shelter employees and rescue volunteers are trying to accomplish the impossible without the help of others to aid in their efforts. Pet homelessness is not just a local problem, but a national and global concern that can only be solved by collaborating with shelters everywhere.
