Instant gratification is the desire to experience pleasure or fulfillment without delay or deferment. We can get almost anything today as fast as pressing a button. Just like groceries, fast food and anything online, pets can be delivered for instant gratification.

One of A Kind Pet Rescue is not following this path of instant gratification. We do not offer our adoption applications online because we encourage potential adopters to meet the pet, bond with the pet and get to know the pet prior to taking the next step of applying. We’re often asked if we can email an application and accept a credit card payment to hold a pet for someone. How would one possibly know if the pet they are attempting to purchase online has the disposition that they are seeking?

Every day we witness individuals falling in love with our fur babies in our facilities. This is one of the perks of our profession, as we do it as well! Prior to taking the next step, ask yourself if this pet fits into every aspect of your life. Are you able to commit to a lifetime? So often we attempt to rehabilitate pets who have been tossed aside, left homeless, dropped at a shelter or been in and out of rescues. These experiences are as detrimental to an animal as they are to a child.

Adopting a new pet is a long-term commitment. We encourage our adopters to think long-term prior to filling out an application. It’s easy to fall in love with the soft fur, the puppy dog eyes, the quiet purr, the cute faces and playfulness of a puppy or kitten. But are you prepared for a fifteen or twenty-year commitment to a pet? Is your financial situation secure enough to support the medical needs of a new family member? Consider emergency needs as well as the ongoing preventative care. Is your life stable enough to keep a pet by your side no matter what?

We often have pets returned to us because of life changes. We always take them back, as our pets have a forever home with us. Many returns, however, can be avoided with additional thought and planning. This holiday season, when you’re considering whether bringing a new life into your home is the right decision—remember the long-term commitment our four-legged family members require.
