Today, April 30th, 2020, is “National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day!” We are so excited to be celebrating this day and doing what we do best. Technically, we are a rescue, and not-so-much a shelter, but the fact of the matter is that we are all working together to solve the national problem of pet homelessness. The ASPCA states that each year, approximately 6.5 million homeless pets enter shelters. Of those, approximately 1.5 million are euthanized due to overcrowding. If that is not reason enough to adopt a shelter pet, we will give you a few more.

You are not just saving one life, but two. When you adopt a homeless pet, you are giving your new pet a loving home, but also making it possible for us to pull another one from a desperate situation. Unfortunately, the statistics prove that there are far more homeless pets than shelters and rescues can manage. There will always be pets in need of loving homes and care. By adopting a shelter pet, you are doing your part in helping with the national problem of pet homelessness.

Did you know that shelter pets are statistically healthier than purebreds? This is true because certain purebreds have developed very specific genetic health concerns. Larger breeds, such as German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia. Golden Retrievers are prone to organ tumors. English Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs are prone to breathing and respiratory problems. Many of the toy breeds such as Poodles, Chihuahuas, and Bichons commonly develop cataracts, dry-eye, and blindness. Mixed breed dogs do not carry a strong genetic disposition to any specific health problem.

Making the decision to add a pet to your family is a big decision. We encourage all potential adopters to carefully consider, not only whether to adopt a pet, but where to find that perfect new family member. Shelter pets are a safe, wonderful way to add to your family. If a loving family pet is the goal, there are millions of them that can be found in shelters across the country. Don’t buy your best friends. Adopt them and celebrate!

Since April 30th is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, One of A Kind Pet Rescue will be recognizing this day with extended adoption hours. Our focus will also be on the pets who have been with us the longest. We must still do this by individual appointments, but we are taking steps to increase our rescue efforts while maintaining a sanitary, safe environment for everyone.
