One of A Kind Education

Our mission is to save the lives of pets in imminent danger. Often, these pets are pregnant dogs and cats that have ended up in an animal control facility that lacks both the time and resources to care for a mother and her babies. As a result, the mothers will be euthanized

Since our rescue has eight birthing suites available, we often pull these mothers-to-be from these facilities and provide them with a safe, comfortable place to give birth here at One of A Kind Pet Rescue. In the process, we ensure that the mother and babies receive proper care and nutrition.

Occasionally, that care turns into a very expensive, life-saving ordeal. This week, a litter of six newborn puppies that we are caring for became gravely ill with the Parvo virus. Though the mother was vaccinated when brought in, she had unknowingly contracted the virus prior to entering our facility. This is a highly fatal, rapidly progressing, gastrointestinal virus that causes the puppies to quickly dehydrate. The mortality rate is 91% in untreated cases and it is imperative to act fast when this occurs.

All six puppies were quickly transported to a local vet hospital for treatment that includes IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, and antibiotics. Thankfully, all six puppies survived, and are recovering. However, this hospitalization is very costly and something that our clinic is not equipped to provide.

One of A Kind must pay well over $1,000 for the treatment of each individual puppy, bringing our total expense for that litter to almost $8,000. In about seven weeks, all six puppies will be available for adoption and will have the same standard adoption fee as all other puppies. It will take us many months to recoup this expense. The only way to do this is through the donations of our supporters.

This is just one example of the lengths we will go to in saving lives. We believe that these puppies will bring joy and happiness to multiple families in years to come. With your help, we can continue to save many more!
