Where do we get our puppies and kittens? 

Most of our babies are born in our facilities. We rescue a pregnant female, and after she gives birth, we care for her young either in our facility or with a foster. When the baby reaches eight weeks of age and is of sufficient health and weight, it’s spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated to age, de-wormed and flea/tick treated. Occasionally, we’ll rescue an entire litter of puppies and/or kittens from a pound. Other times, we will rescue a puppy (or a litter) from euthanization at a puppy mill when they are unable to find a pet store or home. 

What is the breed mix?

Unfortunately, we don’t know. In almost all cases, we don’t know who the father of the litter is. It could be any breed. In the cases in which we have the mother, sometimes the breed is obvious. If the mother is a Beagle, German Shepherd, Dalmation or obvious breed, we’ll state as such. In many cases, the mother is a mix of various breeds herself. Please know this prior to adoption. Our veterinarians and dog specialists do their best to determine breeds, but nothing is exact. The pets never have papers. When litters are pulled from the pound, we have no idea what the breed is. The best we have is an educated guess.  

Health Matters: 

Rescue work is very fast paced. Our rescue coordinator is busy 24/7 pulling dogs and cats from the euthanasia list of pounds all over the tri-state area as well as coordinating with other rescues. A dog or cat can go from the streets, to the dog warden’s truck, to the pound, to a transport rescue, to our transport driver, to our clinic, and then to our adoption center within a week. We do everything in our power to keep all surfaces clean and sanitized, but the pet may have been exposed to multiple viruses during their journey or prior to arrival. Our vaccines upon entry may not always prevent an outbreak from occurring due to an exposed virus within the past couple of days. In cases where an outbreak does occur, we do everything in our power to get your newly rescued pet healthy again. We don’t have the resources to conduct blood work or extensive testing on every pet we rescue. If the pet appears healthy, we assume that it is. We conduct standard tests such as heartworm, FIV, FeLV, etc. We always treat conditions that present themselves while in our care, regardless of the cost. This includes, but is not limited to, heart surgery, orthopedic surgery, eye surgery and extraction, dentals, mass removals, etc.  

What are Your Adoption Fees? 

Our adoption fees are carefully determined. Occasionally, specials will take place for various reasons, but otherwise, the prices are standard and listed here.Pets can be adopted from county animal shelters at a lesser fee, but animal shelters are funded by the government and your tax dollars. One of A Kind Pet Rescue is not government funded and must rely on our adoption fees, donors and fundraising to cover operational costs. We operate two facilities with over fifty employees. At any given time, we are caring for over 500 pets. Please  understand adoption fees are supporting the efforts of the entire mission. You’re helping all of our animals, not just the one you choose to adopt.
