One of A Kind Education

This Week at One of A Kind Pets!

Sometimes, there is so much going on in the world of rescue, it leaves our heads spinning! By mid-day Monday this week, we already had every minute booked on the calendar for the entire week. Even though our days fill up quickly, we never lose the love that we have for saving the lives of animals in need. Here is a quick look at everything that is currently happening.

We have dog transports arriving every single day this week. This includes many dogs coming in from a hoarding case that has been brought to our attention, two pregnant mamas coming in from a pound, two more animal control facilities bringing dogs who were in danger of being euthanized for space, and several puppy mill dogs who were discarded as no longer useful. This is a total of 46 dogs/puppies. We realize this may sound like a large number, but it is just another average week for us.

We also have cats arriving on transport three days this week from various animal control facilities. Our cat team is always responding to public pleas for help with homeless kitties as well. We wish we could say yes to everyone, but the sad reality is that we are just not able.

To prepare for these intakes, our amazing staff is constantly cleaning areas to prepare for their arrival. As soon as one animal is adopted, the area is deep cleaned to prepare for the next. Last week, we celebrated 87 total adoptions, making space for about that number of pets scheduled to arrive this week. The laundry never stops.

While all this hustle and bustle is happening at the adoption center, our medical team is busy down the street spaying and neutering about 180 cats and dogs each week. If spaying and neutering were the only concerns, that would be easy! Unfortunately, rescue also brings a great deal of illness and injury to our doors. Leg and tail amputations, eye enucleations, wound care, dentals, parasites, and respiratory infections are presented weekly and sometimes daily. We are outsourcing specialized surgeries such as orthopedics and heart surgeries. Though this is routine for our medical team, it is not routine for the fur baby, and our animal care staff takes great pride in the love and compassion expressed each day. We take them home when necessary…frequently.

During adoptions, intakes, surgeries, and medicating we have volunteers helping out and being oriented to our mission. We have accounts payable and accounts receivable processing transactions, along with event planners, fundraisers, purchasers, and groundskeepers all doing what they do best! Even when not open to the public, the rescue is very, very active and busy. There are so many direct and indirect costs associated with operating a rescue of this size, we need all the help we can get. It truly takes a village.

If you would like to help us, please donate to our mission.
