The Calm Before the Storm

Are you aware that there is a “kitten season?” It is not defined by a specific date, but rather the activity of the cats in relation to the weather. Regardless of the date, when the weather in Ohio begins to warm, the cats begin to mate. Roughly 63 days later, kitten season begins. Typically, this is between April and November.
Because we are approaching the end of winter and the coldest spells, we are in what is referred to as “the calm before the storm.” That means we have very few kittens available for adoption and our phones are a bit quieter as we prepare for the next storm of kittens. We are bolstering our foster database, deep cleaning the kitten areas, and stockpiling supplies for the next round. It is a labor of love that consumes almost all staff members of the rescue because we are all so passionate about rescuing kittens in need.
Altering the Course of the Storm
While it is our mission to rescue animals in need, the less animals that require rescuing the better. Spaying and neutering can help reduce the amount of homeless pets.
Did you know that female cats can become pregnant at the very young age of four months? She can produce up to three litters each year. In seven years, she and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens! Last year, One of A Kind Spay & Neuter Clinic performed 4,370 spay surgeries. Without the procedure, the potential offspring could possibly produce up to 1,616,900,000 kittens in seven years.
What better time than this calm before the storm to prevent as many unwanted litters of kittens as possible? February 17 through March 17 is our annual month-long Beat the Heat spay promotion. Female spay surgeries with vaccines are only $25. Normally, these services would cost $79. It is because of generous donors and fundraising that we can provide these much-needed services. If you would like to donate to this cause, please refer to the DONATE button on our website, mail your donation to us, or come see us in-person.
Please Note: In order to qualify for the Beat the Heat promotion, you must mention the ad at the time of scheduling or drop off. To schedule, please email us at one of the following: clinicdirector@oneofakindpets.com, clinicsuperv@oneofakindpets.com, or scheduling@oneofakindpets.com. In your email, please leave your name, telephone number, and how you heard about the promotion; we will contact you promptly. Pet homelessness is a community problem that can only be cured with the help and support of the entire community.
