It’s Happy, Healthy Cat Month

To recognize this special month, we would like to discuss a topic that is very important to all of us at One of A Kind: when cats should be indoors, when they should be outdoors and when the transition could be made from outdoor to indoor. There’s a misconception that cats are resilient, hardy, resourceful and able to fend for themselves. This may be the case for some, but it’s not the case for most.

Let’s begin with feral cats. A feral cat is a domestic cat that’s born outdoors, unhandled by humans and generally independent. Ferals can be a positive presence in many environments, as they will rid the area of rodents. Ferals should not be left entirely to their own devices. During periods of inclement weather, shelter which allows the cat to come and go at will should be provided

Trap, neuter, release (TNR) programs are in place to help prevent illness and over-populating. TNR programs allow individuals to set humane traps for cats and to transport them to a participating clinic or vet’s office to have them spayed or neutered. The vet will sterilize the cat, administer vaccines and treat any health issues that may be present, usually at a discount. The cat is then returned to its original location. Do not take feral cats indoors as they could be harmed or harm you. These programs are growing in popularity and are proving to be very successful in diminishing feral cat colonies in a humane way.

Keep cats indoors if it’s the only environment they have ever known. Cats are not successful hunters if they grew up indoors, fed and cared for by humans. They’re not equipped to withstand the climate, and they’re not keen enough to avoid predators. Indoor cats that are turned outside are basically sitting ducks and will most likely result in death for the cat. All cats and kittens adopted from One of A Kind Pet Rescue (with the exception of our feral cats) are required to be indoor-only pets.

There are times when an outdoor cat can become an indoor cat. A tame outdoor cat is referred to as a stray. When strays are found wandering , they can and should be taken in. They are usually scared, , terribly thin and desperate for affection. Finally, a veterinarian checkup should be performed to test for Feline Leukemia, FIV and other illnesses as well as a microchip. Someone may be looking for their beloved pet! Bringing a stray indoors and caring for it forever will make a very happy, healthy cat!
