One of A Kind Education

Collaborate, Care, Create Change

If you are ever behind the scenes at One of A Kind Pet Rescue, you know that what we do is non-stop. It is a constant, fast-paced environment of essential work. Each year, we rescue, heal, and adopt over 4,000 cats and dogs. To accomplish this task, we all must be on the same page in providing what is best for our staff, rescues, and customer service. We are frequently asked how we do it. The answer to that question is, we collaborate on where the need is and how we will respond. We care about the people and animals involved and do our best to provide for them. And we do all of this in an effort to create positive change within our communities and society.

Our collaboration efforts begin with our rescue team. These are the individuals who are personally contacted about the animals most in need of rescue. Most of these requests go directly to our Rescue Coordinator, Dog Manager, and Cat Manager. Occasionally, others within our organization will receive the requests through various means. This occurs daily, and it is a constant collaboration between all parties to ensure we have adequate space and staff available to satisfy the need. Because the requests come in multiple times daily, we are always at capacity with a waiting list of rescues.

After the rescued pets arrive and complete intake (general assessment and vaccines) the animal care staff will then begin to make them feel as comfortable and loved as possible. Though safety and cleaning protocols are in place for all, there are no limits placed on the amount of socialization, play time, enrichment, and rewards for the pets. Because many of our rescues come from unstable, unsafe, and unsocialized conditions, we focus on healing the inside as much as the outside. Our animal care team collaborates with volunteers to further support the socialization and overall positive experience while in our care. Our medical team will begin treating any immediate health concerns while the animal managers schedule any and all surgical procedures with our clinic.

Sixteen years ago, our founder opened One of A Kind because there was an obvious need for change in the community. So many years later, we have seen the change happening. Along with other rescues and improved shelter conditions, the kill rate has dropped significantly for companion animals in shelters near us. One of A Kind is part of the no-kill movement, which promises to never kill for space or time, and we are diligently working with other shelters in high-kill areas to create change in their communities. By supporting us and working with us, you are making it possible to achieve our goal of providing a loving home for all companion animals across America.
