One of A Kind Education

Throughout the year we will ask the public to help us by fostering pets. This is a commitment and should not be taken lightly! We have listed just a few of the reasons why we are in need of caring people who will open their homes and hearts to pets in need.

Kitten Season
Currently, we are gearing up for “kitten season.” In the spring, outdoor cats begin to give birth in places where they feel safe. Many of these places are often not ideal for local humans: in garages, barns, sheds, or under decks. If the litter is discovered and tampered with, the mother cat will begin to move her babies to a second location. This process will sometimes result in a kitten or two being left behind. We receive numerous calls a day asking us to rescue these litters and/or abandoned kittens. As you can imagine, our facility is not big enough to accommodate every request.

Puppies
Our six-week-old puppies regularly go into foster for two weeks while weening from the mother. Puppies almost always go out in pairs, which is a good thing, as the mothers are growing impatient with the pups, and will sometimes hurt them in their corrections or impatience. At the end of the two-week period, the foster brings the puppies to our clinic for their spay/neuter surgeries and we adopt them out from there. On many occasions, the foster will choose to adopt one or both puppies!

Pets That Are Healing
We often have pets here at the rescue who have recently undergone a serious surgery. The environment here is not the most conducive to rest, relaxation, and low stress. A quiet home is the best atmosphere to promote healing and recovery. This is where a foster comes in.

Behavioral Issues
Some dogs here at the rescue have had behavioral issues. Because of this, they have been put through an extensive board-and-train program with professional trainers. This rehabilitation is very successful and has allowed us to place several dogs in loving homes who would have otherwise been euthanized. Once they complete their training, it is imperative that they go directly into a home, rather than back to the rescue where they tend to regress from the stress of the environment.

As you can see from all the reasons listed above, fostering becomes essential to our ability to rescue as many as we possibly can. Your home environment is an expansion of our facility. Many rescues do not have a brick-and-mortar facility and operate strictly with fosters. Because we have great facilities, we have not done this in the past, but are now expanding our operations into a foster-based program. This allows us to save even more lives.

If I Foster, Can I Have Pets in My Home?
Yes. You can certainly have your own pets in your home, but we do ask that the fosters remain separate. This is for the health and safety of all. When we take in strays or rescue from pounds, we never know what illnesses they may be afflicted with, so it's best to isolate the new fosters until we are certain of their health. Additionally, it is imperative that your pets at home are spayed/neutered, and current on all vaccinations. This quarantine period may not be necessary if the pet has been in our care for more than two weeks, and we are certain everyone is friendly!

How Does Fostering Work?
The foster will pick the pets up from our facility and provide the transportation for vaccinations and surgeries. We will provide all the food for the duration of their stay. We will also supply the foster with crates, newspapers, and any medications and/or supplements that the pet may require.
