Vacation Time!

In Northeast Ohio, the slightest glimpse of warm weather creates a great longing for summer vacation. It is becoming increasingly more popular to include our pets on family vacations, as they are members of the family after all. Whether or not to include your pet on vacation is something to consider in your plans. If you decide you will not bring your pet, the most important question should then be: Who will care for your pet while you are away?

Many of us enjoy vacation locations and activities that can easily accommodate our dogs. Traveling in an RV, driving to the beach, or adventuring off to a mountain cabin may be perfect getaways for your pup. You will also want to think about how you will spend your time on vacation. If your family heads off on a big Disney vacation and you will be away from your furry friend a good portion the time during the trip, this may not be the best vacation to bring your pet on. Remember, pets need both room to roam and time with you to play.

One thing to consider when planning your trip is how well your pet deals with travel. Some pets may get car sickness, anxiety, stranger danger, and health issues while traveling that may prevent your pet from sharing the family vacation. In this situation, you will want to find someone to take care of your pet while you are away.

Frequently, as dogs age, they prefer not to be removed from their comfort zones. Slowing reflexes, dementia, failing sight and hearing may all be contributing factors of this feeling. Senior dogs tend to be most comfortable in their homes with what they know and love. If you have a friend or family member who can dog sit, this is the ideal solution! If your dog is young, active, and social, on the other hand, he may love to attend a doggie sleepover camp! There are so many creative and fun options for our dogs that would make their vacation just as fun as the humans!

In any case, please remember to stock up on food and treats while on vacation, and do not neglect to fill and provide your furry family members with their medications should they require them. If you travel with your pets, ensure that they are safely secured in the vehicle while traveling, and take occasional exercise/potty breaks. Vacations should be enjoyed by all!
